Grateful Dead
“Season Opener / SF Spring '15”
Oil on wood panel
8x10
I selected the Dead because I believe they were one of the most important bands ever. Even if you don't like them, or their music or the nomads/wandering free-spirited souls that are often associated with them, it's hard to dismiss what they did as a band, and what they gave to live music and who they influenced. They successfully blended rock, reggae, country, blues, bluegrass, folk, space rock, ambient, jazz and performed it live in a fashion where it is near impossible to be duplicated. Pretty much a different setlist every night. They created a following not based on radio hits, but constant touring and word of mouth. As a consumer of music, this makes sense to me. I want to see a band that takes risks on stage, improvises and tries new material. Maybe it's not polished or doesn't work the first time- that's what makes it a live experience.
